Mr. Gleason and Mr. Godfrey November, 1958
03/26/09 3:31 PM

Hi,

Although I read in the career timeline of the five daytime appearances that Gleason made on The Arthur Godfrey Show in November, 1958, no mention was made of the fact that Gleason was scheduled to be Godfrey's guest on the latter's night time show that following Tuesday. Unfortunately, Jackie suffered a malady (forcing Jackie to miss the broadcast), which Arthur referred to as getting eye makeup in his eyes (receiving a "sure...sure..." look as Godfrey speaks the words) from having played an "inebriated clown" in a sketch on his show. Arthur mentions that Gleason was rescheduled for the appearance in December, 1958 (wonder if he made it...). However, on the night of his absence, Roberta Sherwood was the replacement guest, and clips from some of the five apperances are shown, including how Jackie got into show business and he mentions the man who was his inspiration. It's amazing to watch The Great One casually spouting one liners about golf, entertainment and so forth on this episode. I have a video copy of this program (a friend owns the kinescope).
